Aviva operates as a diversified insurance provider, with its shares traded on the London Stock Exchange. The company's corporate history extends to the 17th century, originating from the foundation of Hand-in-Hand. This mutual society was established in the wake of the Great Fire of London, primarily to offer protection against fire damage. Hand-in-Hand was later acquired by Commercial Union in 1905, having notably provided coverage for significant London sites such as London Bridge, the British Museum, and Lambeth Palace throughout its existence. Aviva's life assurance business commenced in the early 18th century with the creation of Amicable, another mutual entity, whose mission was to secure the financial well-being of widows and children following the death of a family member.
